Vowel Memory Game

Here's a simple game to see whether Musa is easier to learn than the IPA. Print out the following page and cut the images apart along the lines. We give you enough blanks for two people.

Now find someone who doesn't know the IPA. It's OK if they know the Roman alphabet. First, give them either one of the images with symbols, and let them study it for, say, one minute. Then take it away, wait five minutes, give them a blank image, and tell them to fill in as many letters as they can remember. Then do the same thing with the other image with symbols: one minute of study, then wait five minutes, then write what they remember. Score both attempts any way you feel is fair: only correct answers, partial credit if they're close, penalties for wrong answers... you decide.

Repeat as often as you like. Vary the times, and the order of the two alphabets. In most cases, they do much better with the Musa. The IPA requires them to distinguish between similar symbols. Musa, on the other hand, forms patterns, and they can see them. Musa is just much easier to learn.
